Platforms for Doing Nothing – Institute for Art and Architecture/Academy of Fine Arts

A future scenario is envisioned in which human civilization has collapsed, yet remnants of humanity persist on Earth. The setting features a grand monument from the past,originally built to convey messages to extraterrestrial life when humans believed they could communicate with the universe on a one-to-one basis. Now, beneath this once-symbolic structure, people live in conditions reminiscent of earlier times, relying on basic means.

The project reflects the consequences of humanity’s hubristic attitude toward the planet. It offers a poignant commentary on the contrast between humanity’s cosmic ambitions, believing they could reach out to outer space, and the reality of terrestrial survival following the failure of that dream.

The translation of an identified fragment into a representational format through drawing, model, collage, 3d scan or hybrid media in order to explore its architectural and spatial characteristics.

This step aims to extract the fragment from its original context and begin engaging with its formal or experiential potential.

The introduction of Artificial Nature
A site visit to the Vienna Zoo as the basis for the engagement of the project with the idea of constructed environments simulating natural conditions—so-called artificial natures. The removal of animals from the zoo, the opening of all enclosures, and the removal of its prescribed function as a reconsideration of the site as a spatial framework for human habitation. A speculative shift leading to the critical examination of the design, containment, and architectural performance of nature.

It reflects the fruitlessness of human endeavors, especially when humankind believed in alien life forms and erected monuments that now seem meaningless.
These memories of ruin serve as post-apocalyptic symbols, illustrating the consequences of human-made ideas.

The horizontal columns, former lamps representing the futile lights of capitalism, are meant to be opened up and broken apart, enhanced with three-dimensional letters carved into the beams.

Using a Lego-like technique, the opened and broken lamps create an environment that ironically symbolizes a fractured society, inhabited by a semi-miserable human daily life.

The process of re-settlement occurs slowly, as inhabitants reflect on their philosophical outlooks. They inhabit the space again or climb the beams via ladders, floating above the world—seemingly detached from gravity, space, and time.
